Ok here goes a longer personal list:
1, give the entire unit a basic inspection, look for loose wires, missing or damaged parts, loose or damaged hoses, including inside the control box and any clues about its history (service and unit markings, any date markings). Using a deep well socket...
This topic has came up before, but I can't think of a way to search for it at the moment, hopefully someone else will find a link.
You will generally find it is a risk / reward debate, some people feel it is almost necessary to strip the unit down and rebuild from scratch, others are much more...
I was wondering if your generator has a sheet metal trough under the oil filter canister? I ask because it seems most photos online show them, however my MEP-003a does not have one, and my MEP-002a does. I assume it was a feature that was added at some point to help catch the oil that would...
The gauge I ordered is digital multi feature, and square :( but looks like it will easily fit in the hole. If it does I may see about the possibility of making a round adapter for it. I am taking it one step at a time, hopefully it will be here next week and we can go from there.

Chances are you can get one from any good auto/tractor parts store, just be aware that some are normally open and some normally closed. Or as Munchies said check your local Cummins Onan dealer, just have the right part number from the TM since I think the ones on civilian J series engines is...
My bet is injectors, either clogged or just out of adjustment, could also be low compression due to worn rings or valves out of adjustment. If your starter is weak that could also be part of the issue.

Yes, thanks I think I may have found a digital volt / hz gauge that will fit in the existing opening with little or no modification. I have ordered one from China and will let everyone know how it goes when it gets in. (the hz transducer is broken on my MEP-003a)
Ike
Off hand does anyone know the size of the holes in the front panel for the Hz and Voltage gauges?
Mine is about 20 miles away so it is not handy to run measure.
thanks Ike
I don't think all that much would leak out if there were a shoulder o-ring crushed into head of the fitting, but I don't think the O-ring would last very many test cycles this way.
7/16x20 UNF from what I have been able to find, the problem is this is parallel thread and the seal is normally the copper gasket where the tip gets narrower. A shoulder O-ring fitting might work for testing, but it would be normally unsupported so would tend to blow out.

I ran it in the shop building on the family farm for a couple of hours today while I was working on my MEP-003a, even test ran it powered by the MEP-003a once I had it back together for a few minutes. I had a little raining soot on initial start up and a bit more on cool down with just the...
I just picked up the H82 heater I won from GL last week, it is nearly identical to the Army H83 only real difference is the plug and the soft start assembly.
Anyway, I picked it up, put some diesel in it and it seems to fire up and run. The hour meter shows only 2 hours of run time, I don't...
If your talking about the copper gaskets, they can generally be reused a few times, you just have re-anneal them to do so string them on a steel wire and heat them until they glow a dull red by fanning them with a propane torch, it only takes a few seconds, then allow them to air cool for a few...
I think I have seen them in some aircraft ground support vehicles, I know that I have seen the 6BT in the short Dodge truck looking aircraft tugs, but I think I have also seen the 4BT in the more angular looking tow / tug tractors.

Better yet get a lightly used or never used 50 ft 50 amp rv cord off ebay which will likely be 6/4 or 3 #6 conductors and 1 #8 ground, these often much less expensive than you can otherwise buy SO cord. I picked up 2 35ft lengths with damaged plugs that way a couple of months ago for $60...
