    newbe M1008 questions

Could be a failing injection pump. Most mechanical diesel injection pumps use a governor to control the engine, the throttle pulls on a spring which overcomes the centrifugal governor force, where the two forces balance is the governed engine speed. When certain parts of the pump wear, the...

The M1031 with 5" lift, 12-bolt H1's and no spacers build!

So it is now an M1028A1?

    Smoke ?

Even at full throttle, there is excess air for the fuel injected. A lot of the smoke is from soot which accumulates in the exhaust system and is only blown out at higher outputs when exhaust temperatures rise. Even my 2000 electronically controlled direct injection turbo diesel smokes on hard...

    M1031 Recovery from Redstone, AL

Medium tow bar with proper feet or 1" OD x 3/4" ID bushings from Tractor Supply work well for towing 1031s behind a 3/4 ton modern truck. A magnetic trailer light set completes the package. We flat towed mine from Ft. McCoy WI to Central Texas with little issue. Most eventful was breaking the...

M1031 is it a good 18ft camper tow rig?

What are the specifics on the hitch? 1031s came with a fixed hook, limiting the off-road ability. Guess that was a consideration of weight. Anyhow, I was looking at a Reese hook and ball, looks like it would bolt up to the existing bumper mount bolt pattern. With it, I could pull ball mount...

    Starter Sticking

The under dash relay has been replaced? Could also be the starter itself as it too has a relay solenoid but they usually fail open, not closed like the under dash unit. Pull the under dash relay and see if the starter still engages with reconnection of the battery. A battery disconnect switch...

    panel adhesive repair?

The hood on CUCVs is an adhesive bonded inner frame to outer panel, on my 1031, a few of the adhesive spots have separated. This causes some minor "oil canning" which I noticed during rust blush repair (failed e-coat and oxidized CARC caused light rust). What is the best adhesive for fixing...

Will this Harmonic balancer Work on my m1008 From napa

My same experience with all auto parts stores. I can search their inventory from my computer, print out a part number and take it to the store. They always double check the number I give them by entering the vehicle's stats. Then they write the part number on a note and go back to get it. aua

Will this Harmonic balancer Work on my m1008 From napa

Why are you waiting? Only took me 3 hours last night :deadhorse:. No power tools so my arms are sore. Now, for why dampers are important, I cannot do better than a few links. First, torsional vibration: Introduction to Torsional Vibration, by EPI Inc. Now, why engines have torsional...

Will this Harmonic balancer Work on my m1008 From napa

It is a yes. Harmonic dampers don't last forever. I got mine from O'Reilly, it is a Precision Part product, made in Australia. $62.99 which is less than Rock Auto. It is probably only stocked in the regional super store. Check online if you need it now.

    Check your balencer

Yes, and by feel. Inspecting all of it is difficult, the one on my 1031 was only cracked on 1/3rd of the circumference which is why I thought it was fine.

Will this Harmonic balancer Work on my m1008 From napa

That appears to be the elastomeric damper. This is an externally balanced engine, that is provided by the eccentric weight. The harmonic damping is provided by the outer ring, when a cylinder is compressing, the outer ring's momentum over-runs the hub, decreasing the crankshaft's deceleration...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

KD Tool 2291. Has correct bolts for the damper, the main shaft is threaded same as the bolt. So you turn it backwards, the hex head into the crank. You don't have to tighten it, you will turn the main tool to force the damper onto the crank. Now, in between the big washer and the tool, you...

    Check your balencer

No, the Irish guy . I went to NAPA for some 3/8-16 TPI bolts, 1-1/2" long. They had nothing on hand. :cookoo: I fear my local NAPA is going under. And the Irish superstore is far closer than the NAPA warehouse.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Emergency harmonic damper replacement. Once the belts are loose, it is a two hour job with hand tools. I used a NAPA puller which also doubled as the installer with a simple thrust bearing :driver: I didn't remove the fan, shroud or radiator. I started at 2000, had the belts on by 2200 and...

    Check your balencer

My NAPA puller also doubles as an installer with the addition of a thrust bearing. Sounds odd but the puller's threads are the same as the crank bolt, the 1/2" hex head is smaller than the root of the threads so it sails clear of the threads. Don't ask me of the thrust bearing, it is...

    Check your balencer

Cracks were showing on mine so I bought a new one. Made in Australia? Oh well, better than China.

    New Starter Confusion

I've seen starter damage like that. Commutator pads come loose, they are embedded in epoxy/phenolic which is brittle. All it takes is a single pad getting loose, then it either rips the brushes or it flies off. Pulled a starter off a Ford that looked like that. Buttoned it back up and got...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

My M1031 is now legally on the road with permanent plates. I attached the rear under the left tail lamp as it has illumination for the plate. Used an old license plate, drilled to match the reflector beneath the left rear light. I removed the reflector and used those holes to mount the old...
