    Speedometer reading changed

Yes, they left off the speedometer correction unit. The mechanic probably didn't know what it was for as most vehicles use electronic speedometers.

    Advice on buying a M1009.

They aren't new, some have lived hard lives being driven by teens who didn't have to buy insurance or fuel. Many times, off road too. Sure, convoy miles are easy but unit maintenance may have been spotty. For instance, back in the early days, mechanics didn't have Torx bits which were needed...

    transmission swaps

Every transmission incurs loss in power, manual transmissions are far more efficient. Lost power is dissipated as heat, the torque converter is the greatest loss. A steady-state loss of 40 Hp is over 100,000 BTU/hour. Or put in fuel loss, that is about 3 gallons of diesel per hour wasted.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Yesterday's sweat session was fixing small stuff on the M1031 SECM. I replaced the screws holding the vise jaw faces, the holes were rusty so I ran a 1/4"x20 tap into the holes. I thought the 100 PSI cut-out on the compressor was a bit low so after verifying the gauge worked and the pressure...

I might have killed a rat

I know a mouse or two holed up in my M1031 SECM. There is still a nest in the air compressor's drive belt cage. Under the seat was a bunch of shredded aluminum foil, in the ash tray was an empty package of stick chewing gum, the foil-wrapped stuff. Bunch of sunflower seed hulls too. I might...

    Steam Cleaning Engine compartment

Disconnect the batteries and remove. Cover alternators, injection pump, brake master cylinder and booster and all electrical stuff with aluminum foil (easier to manipulate than plastic wrap), then loosen the heavy stuff with paint thinner (not lacquer thinner, acetone or reducer but ordinary...

no start / will start with a sniff of either

Ether is really bad for these engines. Yes, it could be the glow plugs. Easiest way to tell is to measure the resistance of each, bad plugs will have much higher to infinite resistance. Good plugs will have resistance in the 12-18 ohm range. Most indirect injected engines need glow plugs...

    Pro mechanic in central fl

Ah, training a bearing packer. The first mechanic job my dad tasked me with. It builds forearm strength. Starting with deuce bearings, age 10 is about the absolute minimum.

where is the vacuum pump supposed to be, and will the pump for a k30 work in a d30?

And the vacuum pump connects to the throttle position sensor on the injection pump, the lower port. There is a rubber block, GM part number 22506637 which assures proper connection, it isn't needed. It only prevents incorrect assembly. The upper port on the injection pump's sensor connects to...

    Hitch conversions

Remember what trailer the stock hitch is designed for, a 3/4 ton trailer. And it doesn't swivel.

    Correct fuel pump

You aren't the first to get incorrect parts. I purchased brake wheel cylinders from the local auto parts store, still sealed in the wrapper with the correct part number on the bag BUT the parts would not fit at all, wrong piston diameter and much larger. Just my luck, that store was all out of...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Did a little PMCS today on the M1031. Ran it up, checked the governor (still buggy, droop from 61 to 58 Hz with just the compressor0. Checked all fluids and lubricants, checked the universal joints for play, checked grease levels in joints. Once I get the governor running better, it will be...

HELP - stranded in Petaluma CA

I may be able to weld the cracked case if you have all the parts. Even if the bearing bore has to be machined out, it will save an alternator from the junk heap. Castings like this weld easily.

    Major Meltdown resurrection

Hydraulic head issues. The bolt on the center of the hydraulic head gives you visual access to the plunger which should reciprocate 3 times for every revolution on the engine. Remove this bolt (after cleaning the area well) and with electric priming pump disconnected, have an assistant work...

    MEP-002A Starting question

Sticking plungers are best fixed by removing the pump itself. Timing is set by shims so don't worry, replacing the pump with all shims and same button means timing will be like original. With it apart, cleaning is far more effective. Remember, the plunger is match honed to the barrel so...

turning up fuel and egt questions

Every hydrocarbon burns in two steps, the first is hydrogen oxidation, making water vapor and the second is the oxidation of carbon yielding carbon dioxide. That first oxidation is the hotter of the two. If the engine is blowing smoke, there CAN be excessive exhaust gas temperature. Direct...

    VIN confusion with insurance

My agent called me as they could not find any record of the VIN on my M1031. I had to explain it had never been titled so it was like getting insurance on a new car, despite its 26 years of age. Anyone else have insurance woes before registration and titling?

    M35A2 no start...

I am glad it got fixed yesterday. Raining pretty good today. It sure was fun to drive it once fixed. That engine seems peppier than three years ago when I drove it from Beeville to Sinton.

    Removing, rebuilding, reinstalling Hydraulic Head

Sir, Thanks for the response. In the next sentence I said you could snake a wrench through a U Joint, I should have clarified that I'd have the transfer in neutral and snake the wrench through the jack shaft. Nice to see you still on here Floridianson. Eventually, we paint a pretty detailed...
