    Death of a M1031

So sad. One of the most useful CUCVs. Mine was an EOD variant so it lacks the bottle racks and has the radio rack in the right front compartment with antenna mount. But it only had 1.4 hours on the generator with 9009 miles on the odometer. I remember the old M888 Dodge SECM, that was a...

    Cranking Amps uncoded

Sell the 24 volt equipment to recoup your cost of change. I'm in the market for a working volt meter.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

I'll have to write up a procedure for this modification. It isn't difficult, I used aluminum flashing available at any home improvement center and contact cement. You can cut this stuff with ordinary scissors, a few C-clamps and scrap wood will work to form it. I spent 5 minutes cutting and...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

This evening, I determined the flakey voltmeter is the volt meter itself. Bummer, that means a new VM is necessary. The joy was identification of the passenger side kick panel leak. It was the internal fender gutter, dribbling down. I removed the vent panel, then fabricated an extended...

    Cranking Amps uncoded

At 0F, you also have considerable pre-glow. This causes voltage depression in already thermally reduced battery power. Use the Edison vs Tesla debate here, you have a set resistance in the wiring causing voltage depression in the circuit. Edison lost out because back then, direct current...

    Voltage Drop with Load

I replied to this thread, only to have a volt meter issue arise . The gauge is dead on startup, hitting the panel around the gauge brings it alive and functioning proper. I took the bezel off and connected a volt meter to the connector, it gets voltage so I cleaned the connections with...

Chevrolet must have used reject parts

I'm certain there is a beautiful coat of red under the CARC on the right fender of my M1031. I'm not saying this is a reject, it is just a recycled part. Fenders, doors and hood are painted as parts,

Chevrolet must have used reject parts

No more rust on the hood. Lots of sanding and phosphoric acid pickle, then Rustoleum primer. I let the phosphoric acid set over night, in the morning there were large areas of the e-coat peeling up. More feather sanding required to paint. It is done, might need a bit of spot prep before...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

This weekend was de-rusting project. First, the hood had rust bloom through the thin CARC and even thinner e-coat. Then someone had covered the already rusting spots with brush paint, without much care. I stripped the brush paint, then sanded down the rusted spots and used Prep 'n' Etch...

    painting day gone wrong

Polyurethanes can generate carbon dioxide when contacting water. Water can be adsorbed on some primers, making polyurethane a very tricky beast. This is probably the cause of the blistering.

Chevrolet must have used reject parts

Applying it straight over defective e-coat is even worse.

Chevrolet must have used reject parts

Assembly line replaces parts instead of fixing problems, that is the fastest way of assembly. This makes a good quantity of reject parts. There is no question the right fender on my truck was originally painted red. I doubt the spare parts in the federal system were originally painted red. I...

Chevrolet must have used reject parts

My M1031 SECM had some rust bloom on the hood and cab top so I decided to attack it today. I noticed the right fender had a reddish bloom so I hit it with 400 grit only to make the red more brilliant. I checked the fasteners and all look original, the paint matches fine so Chevy must have used...

    M1028A2 question

M1028s first had single rear wheels. Off-road stability was poor so for some, conversion to dual rear wheels after initial manufacture. The A1 variant has a New Process 205 transfer case which provides for power take off. The A2 is the M1028 with dual rear wheels, the A3 is the A1 with dual...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Today was cleaning time. Took the floor mat and pad out along with sill plates and transfer case boot/bezel. The mat had a few tears, I buffed the back side around the tears, then applied contact cement and once dry, affixed rubber sheet patches, also coated with dry contact cement. I...

    M-1031 Contact Truck Generator issue

That could have been really bad. Fortunately you tested before connecting. When I get around to it, I want to make a patch panel to easily reconnect the generator so it can either power the SECM or produce 120/240 split. That would derate it to 8-10 kW but would be useful for home backup power.

Anyone install A/C like this yet?

I looked at a portable AC unit, the main problem is size. Only a twin hose will work, drawing fresh air from outside and ducting the heated air out. That is another problem. The brackets and belt nightmare is why I thought up the 24 VDC motor powered one. The charging system was specified...

Anyone install A/C like this yet?

I found a motor which should work. 70 ampere 24 volt, should put out 2 kW of mechanical power. Now to find a Sanden compressor without electric clutch, then use a Lovejoy coupling, bolt the two together and install in the back of my M1031. Instead of a clutch, it will have a solenoid like the...

Anyone install A/C like this yet?

Another option would be under the seat. There is a good sized depression there, ducts could be routed to the B-pillars where adjustable registers would aim flow as desired. IMHO, if you have a stock heater with defrost, you shouldn't need a unitized heat+cool system. Yes, the unitized systems...

I towed a big boat with my m1009, that's the most you've towed?

The key here, the short wheelbase makes rear towing iffy. We towed my M1031 SECM from Ft. McCoy WI to Central TX behind a 2005 F250 Superduty 4X4 that has longer wheelbase. Flat towed, using a medium tow bar. Sure, we felt the weight in braking and acceleration. No issues with load wagging...
