Front axle is in!
I added a zero rate, longerHD hangers and a extra stock leaf up front. I was a tad surprised on how one leaf could stiffen the front. We all know how arched the springs are and now it's flat!
Wheel well height is 40.5" front and 41" rear. I'm going to add one add one more...
I will have less then a grand in both axles and they both have full rebuilds ( less new gears) including axles, u joints, every brake part and ball joints. I dont think you can beat that with a stick.
Also in the first few posts you would have seen that the rear axle was hacked in and not...
The only issue I see with using NOS brake parts is that they are 20+ years old. Things age and the new friction material of new age shoes is 100 times batter then the old stuff. Just like engine oil you would not use stuff that is 20 years old.
Got the rear axle in and one if the front shackles.
I removed two of the rear leafs and re installed the over load spring ad used 4 inch manufactured blocks.
Note.... When using a 1/2 ton axle and a small lift you will need to have a new drive shaft made.
Well I had to remove the two lower leafs so my u bolts would work with 4 inch steel blocks. Good thing too they were broken.
And yeah she was due yesterday Kenny. Got a soldier B on the way.
Fun fact of the day. A 3/4 ton rear end yoke will fit a 1/2 ton ten bolt rear end. I swamped them out so I did not have to spend 35$ on the convertion u joint.
I hope to have the rear end installed by the end of the day.
First gm drive shaft you have replaced? Gm has used the nylon locking system for 40 years almost.
A good civy repair manual and the military Tm's is the way to go. A little basic auto know how helps too.
Google search is your friend too.
As you pressed the u joints out before heating then up...
A side note on removing the resistor:
The glow plugs can draw a ton of starting power off that first battery. The way the charging system works you are able to install a larger reserve capacity battery up front to insure the voltage won't drop too much while the glow plugs are heating up.
You...
Back to towing and not my "thing" is larger then yours".
I would add a good trans cooler (make sure to install it on the out side of the radiator cooler. Another good idea is new trans fluid (get the good stuff)
Install new heavy duty pads and shoes and make sure your tires are up to the job and...
Well I just ended up ordering new axle kits. Studs, nuts, bearings and seals. If I did not have to replace bearings and seals I would have for sure ran the old axles.
But for only 80$ more I could get the axle kit rather then buy new studs, bearings ect...
I hope to have the rear axle in late...
I got 6 lug. 200 bucks for both with springs and sway bar.
Really I could use the 8 lug hubs and axles but I have a brand new set of steel rims and firestone tires in 6 lug.
