If it won't stay running with no battery I suggest troubleshooting the 24v power supply/battery charger on the unit. Sounds like its not making any juice.

I use a water bottle with the bottom corner cut out. Put an o-ring around the neck of the bottle or a few wraps of electrical tape so it fits into the radiator filler neck snug.

What's more important than the actual level is the tone of the sound. The lower tones from the MEPs are much less harsh than a higher RPM gas engine. In the house the sound of the MEP barely comes through. I like hearing it outside purring away confidently.
