An old set of leather working tools (punches and chisels) is great for cutting gaskets. You can sometimes find them in old thrift shops and estate sales.

If it won't stay running with no battery I suggest troubleshooting the 24v power supply/battery charger on the unit. Sounds like its not making any juice.
Do you think that the lifters are collapsed instead of pumped up? Could the valves be not opening at all?
I would suggest taking the lifters apart and making sure they are all OK. Refill them with clean oil.

I use a water bottle with the bottom corner cut out. Put an o-ring around the neck of the bottle or a few wraps of electrical tape so it fits into the radiator filler neck snug.
What's more important than the actual level is the tone of the sound. The lower tones from the MEPs are much less harsh than a higher RPM gas engine.
In the house the sound of the MEP barely comes through. I like hearing it outside purring away confidently.

The general advice I give in these situations is to run it as you need to then load bank it when you have time. This stuff doesn't happen in a few hours. The more load you do run on it the slower it happens.
