    Storm Chasing

As far as upgrading axles: installing anything that will make the axle more durable or stronger or rebuilding them with those components. C-clip eliminator kits, stronger axle shafts with higher spline counts, better axle bearings, etc, etc. 4wheelparts.com has an entire section dedicated to...

    Storm Chasing

Also there's other axles that can be had with a 3.07 gear ratio and are about the same size as a 10 bolt, but can be built to be as strong as a stock Dana 60 which you might be able to yank from a same era GM truck. And there's other gear ratios you can still play with hint, hint, hint. . . ;)

    Storm Chasing

Sounds about right. Apparently, they introduced them during the '70s oil embargo becuase the Dana 60 casings couldn't fit a gear ratio higher than 3.55. Here's a bit more info: Pirate4x4.Com - Extreme Four Wheel Drive The gear ratio is d*** close. . . but I still wouldn't run it with 3.08's in...

    Storm Chasing

Its pretty easy to find. Just google "CUCV 12V conversion" Should be the first thing that pops up. Pretty easy to do as well. My understanding is its mostly just rearranging wires and putting a 12V starter on the truck. I believe this is the conversion the forest service does to all their...

    Storm Chasing

Well that's easy. Put a Banks turbo kit on it ($2,000 new, from what I've seen $900 used) or yank all the turbo stuff off an early 6.5 in a junkyard. By the way danoscooter, thanks for hopping on the band wagon and stealing my truck. I thought I was gonna have the only cool truck when I got...

    Storm Chasing

Design ideas: -Roll cage (or at least bar): Could be interior or exterior. Provides protection if truck rolls -Replace seat belts with racing harnesses: The stock belts would probably be fine. Unfortunately, I've rolled at least one truck while wearing stock seat belts and was fine. Honestly...

    Cart before the horse...

I think thinking about doing stuff before you have the truck is completely normal. But maybe I'm thinking too much. If you can find one, grab a M1028A1 or M1031. They've both got a NP205 (granted slip-yoke) T-case to begin with. They're basically the same truck, the 1031's just a cab and...

    Storm Chasing

Meh. Could be worth a shot. My dad used to do this sort of thing with his '88 Silverado, but it was more along the lines of "sit on this hill with a ham radio and tell us what you see. Get the **** out if things start getting too hot (stormy?)"

    1008 starter

Again, you can still run an American made or rebuilt 12V starter. . . I went to Rare Electrical after my alts fried and I got a set of supposedly rebuilt (and also free) alts. The reason I went that route was the "skilled rebuilder" (fancy way of saying the shop had worked on military stuff and...

    1008 starter

:deadhorse: Try Rare Electrical or DB Electrical. They both have 24V starters for 6.2's for less than $100. Not sure if the style is exactly the same or not. You can also run a 12V starter by moving some wires. This is covered in the CUCV wiki (Cucv Wiki - Steel Soldiers::Military Vehicles...

    In the 09 club

Yeah, that puts you at about 1,800-2,100 RPM's or so, which is about the sweet spot for most diesels. I got a 1028 and those 4.56's will pull a house over, but the truck screams going down the road. Fastest I've done is 61mph (confirmed by GPS) for short sprints. Usually I keep it around 55...

    In the 09 club

Wow, 1,300 miles? About what speed did you keep it at for the most part and what size are those tires? I'll do the math. I gotta drive about 1,000+ miles here in a couple of months, but not 100% sure the truck will be happy driving that far with what appears to be a leaky rear seal.

    M-1028 Safe RPM

Might want keep in mind that if your tranny isn't equipped with a lock-up torque convortor, your RPM's will be a bit higher due to slippage. Highest speed my 1028's seen is 61MPH for short sprints (around 2,900 RPM, again slippage) Normally I keep it around 57 give or take (2,700 or so)

I joined the CUCV crowd. M1009 now in the motorpool.

Congrats on the buy. I know somebody who's gonna be doing the Doghead relay mod when he figures out everything that's now messed up! If you fried your starter, Rare Electrical sells both the CUCV 24V starters (about $100) and the "super special" isolated ground alts. Supposedly you can run a...

    M1009 rear storage w/drawers

Sweet. . . I'm thinking of making a run to get more ammo cans to hold my crap. Luckily I'm near all the surplus stores [thumbzup] I'm getting tired of it sliding everywhere in the back of my truck: "Oh h***, speedbump" CRASH "Well there goes everything, everywhere"

    6.2 fuel return miseries

:ditto: Good to know. After my experience with Dorman parts I wouldn't even buy a cigarette lighter if it said "Dorman" on it.

Poll - Who has done the Doghead Relay Conversion

Did it after hearing a few horror stories about the stock relay and what it could do. Took me a bit longer than 30 minutes, but that was mostly due to finding out that the ring connectors I was using were a bit too big on the wire side and figuring out a way to correct this. I believe I've made...

    engine block heater

The CUCV's should have a small fuel heater as part of the fuel filter assembly. Also you might want to look into using something like Diesel 911. Also, giving the go pedal a few pumps before you start it up might help along with keying it until the wait light goes off and then keying it again...

    4 wd light

Anybody know the parts # for a NP205 switch? I've got the M1028A1 and the same problem as 82ABNMP.

Rear Differential Fill Question - M1009

:ditto: Yep, love the valvoline. Mostly because I can use it in the rear AND the front of the M1028  You shouldn't have any problems with overflowing. I just changed out my front and rear diff fluid. I've always just filled up my fluids till they start pouring out the fill plug and have...
