There is a plug in the water pump and there is also a replacement cover plate for the back of the passenger side cylinder head that is tapped for a sensor. The cover plate is getting harder to find, as I understand it.

That sure doesn't sound right. Please diagram how you have the switch wired. If I remember correctly, splicing into the light blue wire should be fine, with the other end connecting to ground via the switch.

Stock M1009 has 6-lug wheels. The data listed in the first post indicates that is an 8-lug wheel. So, no worky unless the axles have been swapped from something like an M1008.
