I don't think you've got an air problem. You may have a problem with your IP. Use the checklists in the TM to troubleshoot.

I've never heard a noise come from a bad plug and yes leaving the key on for more than 30 seconds can burn up the glow plugs. Time to get a GP tool and start replacing. Save yourself some trouble and wire your accessories to run without the key and turn them off when parked.
