RE: Great deal on a back saver for your duece
Don't know about that rain check thing - My son asked for one when he was told they were out of stock, they would not give him one but told him to check back next week as they were supposed to get some more in.
RE: Great deal on a back saver for your duece
My son checked at his local store, they were out of stock (big surprise, considering the price). The nearest HF store to me is 70+ miles away, translating to $25.00 in gas and 4 or so hours of drive time, and they only had 4 in stock when I called...
WOW! I can't believe a parts truck went for $3200.00. I thought I paid too much when I paid $2485 (plus the 10% premium to GL, of course) for my Deuce which needed only a new battery and some minor wrenching to get it into serviceable condition. Mine didn't have a winch, but those folks in VA...
I remember one time when I was doing AT at Fort Drum they drove us out past the Anti Tank range. A whole bunch of Shermans and the like were out there (this was when M48s and M60s were in service, prior to the M1 Abrams), all shot full of holes from bazookas, 90 and 105mm RRs and who knows what...
I strongly agree the service code has little to do with the actual condition of the item. It seems like if someone wants to get rid of an item they no longer want or need they give it an unserviceable service code so they can dispose of it. My truck was labeled "FX" and the batteries were dead...
Chuck - My kit resembles yours, the ether start package is mounted on the firewall and I have another bracket on the rad support to hold a spare cylinder. However, my modus operendi is what red devils dude stated. See my dash plate in the photo. Of course, the dash plate is not entirely clear...
I can't answer if the ether start or flame heater is better. I suspect the ether start is newer and replaces the flame heater, but somehow my gut tells me the flame heater is better AS LONG as it is working properly. Someone else with more knowledge that I please chime in and set us straight...
Good one. I would never have thought of draining the tanks that way to test the check valve. Come to think of it, I didn't even KNOW there is an inter tank check valve!
There is a brand new NOS ether start kit on Ebay for anyone who might be interested. Not mine, just posted in case someone is looking for one. Search for item # 190064630475 if the link doesn't work. It was at $45 when I posted this...
RE: Great deal on a back saver for your duece
As it happens, my son works near a Harbor Freight store. He is going to swing by the store tomorrow and get one for me, and bring it over when he comes here for Xmas. Thanks for the tip - that is a great buy and should be very useful. Now if I can...
Chuck - Straight off of the Secretary of State's Website:
Who Needs a Commercial Driver License (CDL)?
Any Michigan resident who intends to operate the following commercial vehicles is required to have a commercial driver license:
Single Vehicles - Having a gross vehicle weight rating...
RE: Great deal on a back saver for your duece
David - How high above the bed floor is the end of the boom and max and min extension? I've looked at those, $49 seems like a steal! You really need to paint it OD though!
Can you give more info on how you got it for $49? I looked on line, they...
Yes, "TD" stands for "thick deck", originally used only on 5 ton engines. After a while the military decided it was simpler to make all blocks "TD"s, it simplified the overhaul business as a "TD" could be rebuilt for either a 5 ton or a Deuce engine.
Also, the heads are torqued to the spec...
Also, the heads are torqued to the spec torque when replaced, and should be re-torqued (once, and only once) after the engine has been run a few hours. Do NOT torque and re-torque and re-torque, too many re-torques will screw up the fire rings and you'll have to start over again with a new set...
Forget trying to buy boots and seals locally unless you live near a MV parts place. You aren't going to find any of the front boots, seals etc. at your local truck shop. Bearings and such maybe, but not axle seals or boots, they have no civilian counterpart. See the parts x-reference list at...
RE: Bullet holes in Duece??
Somebody sure drove that Deuce a lot faster than I can drive mine. 41822 miles in 126 hours, thats almost 332 miles per hour. No wonder it rolled over! Also note the oil spec on the flame heater cover: 15W40!!!
Here's a pic of an ignition switch I bought from NAPA. It took a little bit of work with the Dremel tool to get it to fit in the accessory switch hole as it was a "D" shape and slightly larger in diameter than the OEM switch. However, is is close enough that I can later remove it and reinstall...
You got a Pal here. I HAVE done a bit of overseas shipping so I know the process. Shipping is a killer though unless you want to wait 6-8 weeks for surface delivery. Let me know if I can help.
