Check the wiring at the coolant temp switch on the passenger rear head. Many times the wires will melt and cause a short.

I looked into buying a unit. Around $40K with a compressor (up to $75K for a big unit).
~$5K for a small unit without a compressor. And up to $30K for the largest unit.

If all else fails you could put in a manual switch. When flooring it flip the switch on. Partial throttle turn it off.

As Southdave said always check your batteries, cables, starter and make sure no hydro lock.
There should not be a wire going directly from one alternator to the other. If so the wiring has been hacked.
