As williamh said it should still go in gear, even without a single wire to the transmission it should have forward (2nd gear) and reverse.

You do not want to use a Dzus fitting that tight, it can damage the spiral cams. there is a proper way to set up the connectors and then there are others, like bending back the spring mounting tabs.

You could be losing more glow plugs. There is a theory that when any plug opens up the voltage/current to all of the other plugs rises causing a cascade effect of plug failures
