No offense, but might they have been 92s instead of 71s? Just wondering because I haven't seen a 71 series in a truck in over 30 years. Seems to me the 92s came out around 1980 maybe?
The old detroits have absolutely no lugging abillity and like wm said your 5 ton doesn't have enough gears to keep the rpm's in an acceptible range. Your main problem, other than owning an oil well to keep the leaky pig well oiled, would be no power at the low end where you want it. My opinion...
No wonder I didn't think of it before, it was too obvious! I knew there was a different ratio because of the different diameter of the drive sprocket vs. the front tire but for some reason I've always thought the t-case took care of it. Duh....
The way sermis describes takes any tire and rim wobble out of the procedure. Alignments were done this way at shops for years before laser alignment came along. It also helps to rattle can spray a stripe down the center of the tire while spinning it. The scribe mark shows up clearly that way.
Similar to the GMC M135/211 double drive shaft setup. Two driveshafts off the back of the transfercase. Got the remains of an WC63 out in the woods for parts if anyone's interested.
Like N1265 said, Dodge W200 4x4 W/3500# front axle. Napa should have them in stock. IIRC inner and outer seals are the same. M880 means nothing to a parts guy.
Might be a dumb question, but I've searched and can only find references to camo colors and patterns for the M880. Weren't they painted a solid color from the factory and if so, what shade od was it?
Sure wish I could go this year. Got a wedding to go to saturday so that kinda shoots that, but if I'm concious sunday I might still make it. Otherwise, I hope to maybe bring a truck next year and see you all there!
The diameter of the drive sproket is quite a bit smaller than the dia. of the front tire, so I would think the t-case ratio would be too far off for any other than stock replacement. If you're not planning any serious mud runs or hill climbs, I don't think track drive only would be a problem. I...
If you're loosing air pressure at a steady rate with your foot son the pedal, you probably have a leak at one of the brake chambers. Have someone step on the brakes for you while you check for leaks. I'm assumeing 929's have standard civilian type air brake systems.
