I have been having a conversation with Jerry Cantrell at Schneider cams, he said that Don Hatz built 200 engines for Chenowth to be used in the FAV with Schneider cams in them.
Here is the original cam specs,
272 duration 234 @ .050” ..363” lift 108 lobe center
I had heard from other sources...
So I think I have enough information now to declare this as likely being a "depot" reconditioned engine, likely a failed FAV engine that was sent back to be reconditioned.
The first clue was the rod bearings are 1st under (.25MM) normally a rebuilt/stroked standard German forged crank would have...
If you are willing to give up the slave connector then go this route, those Hella switches are rated well above anything else in its class and you have a key to remove. the smaller switch kills the 12V which is about all those little switches should be used for.
EDIT, and this key is much easier...
Hole is round, no threads it held in by compression.
Besides teflon tape should not be used on any diesel fuel system, or oil system for that matter (trans/engine)
Wait until you remove one, you would swear your about to break the bolt but it is just the washer holding the bolt head, almost gives you that sick feeling like you just broke a bone when the washer finally fails, it kinda snaps, great washers!!
I thought I would start a thread on the engine rebuild of serial #10
So far these are the specs I have for the engine, it does not look like the original engine as I have not found any green paint on the long block so far, (there is green paint on the engine tin), only the two desert colors, the...
The only time you would build any real heat in the TC is in low range and being heavily loaded (read soft sand) for a long period of time, in matters not what you tow in high range.
The same basic TC is used in many civy applications without supplemental cooling
I really don't know how the military decides which to surplus out, RWH could probably shed some light on that.
I would suppose some were picked because they were deemed not worth repairing, but suspect most are just in a "block" of trucks picked for disposal. due to age or how they were equipped.
Coug is right the fan switch controls the temp.
One of the reasons everyone went to higher water temps in the 70s was for efficiency. (in case you were not there we were all waiting for hours in line to get gas)
ALL the heat you remove via the cooling system is fuel loss it is one of the reasons...
Actually it could not be much worse than anything Detroit turned out in the early 80s, it was all junk.
The amount of vacuum crap ford and others put on their vehicles just to try and comply with pollution standards was a total nightmare, If you got 100K out if a GM product before the cam went...
Is this from actual experience or are you just parroting what others have said?
This has not been my experience, also there is nothing inherently undependable about the HMMWV, most issues are from poor maintenance and neglect.
IMHO everyone is over thinking this, many of these sat for 10 years or more with no preparation and some even had well used oil in them.
just keep the batteries charged.
I do not think idling them is a good idea, as others said everything does not get hot enough to burn off the moisture created...
Well the transmission is in and aligned, I had to remove the shift cover and re-install the speedo cable drive adapter, this is a custom mod as the 091 did not have a speedo drive, it is needed because the off road spindle set up does not allow for a speedo drive (the original German design...
