A a Deuce I put one in the cheapest I could as a test. When cutting open the filter to see I found the media did not breakdown but did get fouled with crud. It works.

Put a coolant filter. Yes it is worth it. Are you going to keep the truck or NOT? You will see when you cut the old filter apart and examine the crap filtered out. Installation of a coolant filter is a decision. Protect your equipment.
