I would say your voltage regulator is a goner. The overvolt condition blew up your battery. If you run it again, more things will blow. Disconnect the alternator until repairs can be made.

I believe the serp system is the new standard in reliability. My Ranger with serp went 360K with no repairs to the serp system, the Chevy I just parted went 340K and everything serp related appeared original. Of course the belt has to be changed at 100K.
Maybe fuel starvation. The in tank pickup may have rust holes allowing air in instead of gas. See if you are getting a solid stream of gas from the pump when you crank the engine after a stall.

Sounds like some GI was in the process of cannibalizing these parts, or had replaced them and failed to tighten the mounting bolts. Then when you got the truck and inspected it stem to stern you missed all this. My best guess. These Cat engines are not known for shedding accessories at will.
