Look at it this way. Are you going to risk messing up that EXPENSIVE Allison just to save 3 hours pulling and replacing driveshafts? Not me. With the driveshafts removed, the TM more or less says you can tow at highway speeds. The 35 mph is the limit with the driveshafts in place.
Agreed with Stonepicker, a minute of running with no oil will not hurt it. There are Hood "fluid drained" horror stories, to include holes drilled in axle housings and pick axe holes in pans. This was done by a contractor who was supposed to prepare the trucks for scrapping.
Welldigger, don't confuse everyone in an alternator ID thread, the Leece-Neville and Prestolite 60A alternators are physically very different and do not share parts.
I see a fan there. You have the Leece-Neville which a personally believe is more reliable than the Prestolite. Clean up the connections, make sure you are getting excite voltage at the little wire. Still no green needle, then you are out $300 bucks or so.
The later overdrive transmissions in HMMWVs are the 4L80E. Yes there is a standalone military controller for this transmission, as well as numerous civilian types as well, which have been discussed here, search "4L80E controller"
Thanks for posting the two side by side. I think this is the only photo of the two generations ever taken. Quick question, why does the SO have a huge piece of flex coming off the stack?
