You did good! Welcome to Steel Soldiers. Throw some HMMWV Wranglers on there for a cheap fix to your slick swampers . . . 440, must be great, 318 has to work hard. Oh and BTW say hi to Sarah next time you see her.
Thanks guys, that was exactly the info I was looking for. jwallers link to the Engine Rebuilder's article said it all: The older GM blocks are considered scrap by engine rebuilding pros. That is why we see all the pull-out HMMWV engines coming out of DRMO and not going back for rebuild.
jpcj-7 said in a post a while back that he discovered the alt was used in civi trucks in the 80's. I would bring the thing in to my heavy duty parts house or alternator shop and let them see what they could figure out.
All I see missing the the clutch lever and the cable. Looks like a good deuce winch to me. Check for hairline cracks in the gear housing and for a broken bull gear.
Is there any reason to believe that current production AM General 6.5 L diesels are better, or more durable than those made by GM previously? Are the cranks still cast? I understand Navistar manufactures the raw engine castings for AM General. I would like to build a highly reliable 6.5 and...

Hood and door stars are only painted on one...
If this were the case the carnage would stop when you cut off the ignition key, With the earlier desrcibed condition, if you cut off the key, the starter just keeps cranking (as you panic).
Ouch. It seems like every two weeks someone posts about this same problem. It is caused by the starter relay under the dash failing in the closed position. If your (now fried) starter was previously doing the job, it was not the wrong one.
I think that a condition of membership on this...
Ha Ha. That truck has some kahones, that being the double reduction Timken-Detroit SD353 axles at 7.33 ratio. Will pull anything given traction.
OK, back on subject. I have done several recoveries from where these trucks are parked, so I may be of assistance. They are in a tight fenced...
