Injector pump timing is set by the camshaft "lash" which is done by button thickness. Yes, the plunger also turns but this is for distribution and it can be off by a tooth or more and the engine will still run.
A running daily driver FMV is the best for charge or jump start. Spare oil and fuel gaskets are a must, filters not so much..as long as the fuel is fresh.
I have the bonus with the 1031 and the working PTO generator. Its still wired in 208 volt three phase but with three phases of 120 volt...
Generators work by spinning a magnet inside a coil(s). These generators use an electromagnet and the electricity for this magnet comes from the voltage regulator. So running a set at lower than rated speed causes the regulator to max out. This burns the output transistor.
Yes, I simplified...
I've cleaned one with solvent. Nasty mess. These manifolds are quite soft and elastic so there are no issues getting them to seal. The EGR valve is sealed with an o-ring
Now yet another thing to check. I have a 002a and maintain another 002a w ASK and a 003a.
I grew up with these when I was in Uncle Sam's Army. Somehow didn't see that issue of PS.
It is back alive!! Installed the pump and checked flow before the PC mark, spot on flow stopped at PC. Smoky startup but cleared after warming. Wet stacked bad from all the problems.
Had to swap the VR as that died due to low RPM or extensive cranking. Had a spare handy.
Got the problem identified. Pulled the IP and took the button out, #12 and pump housing stamped 12. Turned the face gear and the plunger isn't turning. Broken key again. I have a parts spare but no more. Going to put the hydraulic parts through ultrasonic cleaning. Then brand new fuel.
Interesting. My 1031 has a weight problem and is squatting due to tools..welder with oxyacetylene rig and all the other stuff.
I was thinking of air assist all around to level it out. Any issues? The air compressor works well and the system holds air so no need for a compressor.
Thanks! My life has been a bit busy to take care of this generator..plus the owner keeps getting different FMVs for me to work on ;). I'm pretty adept at this style of injection system from M35A2 multifuel to Bosch VE pumps.
My main problem is working nights 4 days a week, then adapting to...
Test the meter, test the switch and trace the lines to look for breaks. If I recall correctly, this is a direct reading meter. The frequency meter indicates a proportional current for the frequency and requires a transducer so never hook it directly to utility power, otherwise it will be...
RPM at idle requires very little fuel. If it smokes at idle and the smoke is black, chances are timing is off. The tiny fire is extinguished by expansive cooling before the carbon can burn .
Some 1031s had incorrect governor wiring from the factory. They hooked the high idle to the governor...
I have tried multiple times. Take valve cover off. Roll engine until the PC mark and both valves closed on #1. Cam lobe next to IP cam should point down and out.
I am pretty sure it is the drive key. So once more, pull the pump and take it apart.
The part that broke is the pushrod end mounting boss. Thin gray cast iron, its gray because the excess carbon in the iron precipitates out as graphite, making it quite brittle. The break was into the piston bore but this is the low pressure side of the piston so the repair had to be...
Take the pump apart. If the plunger is stuck, it will trip the breaker. My new potion of choice for dirty diesel parts is Diesel Mechanic in a Bottle. This will get the gum out.
Take the base off the pump and pull the strainer. Then remove the spring clip holding the lower pump check valve...
This unit had been running and powering my friends house on a backup basis 8 years ago. Old fuel caused plunger sticking and the drive key broke. I swapped that out and it worked again. Few years later bad fuel..see the issue? I put it back together correctly with the same pump, shims and...
Running with no load for 5 minutes and it shut down after the air shutters opened maximum. Checked the thermal protection and it tripped. Smoke from the cylinder head. Felt hot.
This is the thread I need..working on a 003 that is driving me nuts..flow timing shows timing off but PC mark and face gear alignment spot on. The IP has a history of breaking the drive key so I'm thinking it has damaged the drive key instead of breaking it. This would upset the distribution...
