I agree with Action. The only way the batteries should drain with a battery disconnect on the negative is if something else is hooked up into the system causing a drain.
I had to bleed mine the same way. Left the cap off, filled to overflow, turn the wheels back and forth a few times, then refill, turn it on, turn the wheels, and put the cap on and called it good.
There does appear to be someone that's done disc brake relocation to the spindle.
As for the "cost prohibitive" part, it's going to cost more than the HMMWV did to convert everything to electric, so if the price difference between one larger motor and multiple smaller motors is an issue, then...
btw, the differentials are AMC 20. If you do a search for replacement gears, you likely won't find anything that's geared as high as the HMMWV already is. Because of the portal hubs, the end gear ratio is pretty low, but the differential is only about half of the gearing.
Looking around, the...
Still not seeing the reason to go to a 1:1 rear end gearing.
If it's supposed to be a direct drive motor for the wheels, then just eliminate the differential completely and do independent motors for each wheel.
If it's supposed to directly replace the engine, but still be hooked up through the...
Not likely, as that would require a redesign of the diffs in order to fit the gears.
The bigger question is "Why?"
you're talking about increasing the output speed by a factor of 2.5-3 times faster, but also drops the input by the same ratio when driving lower speeds. That puts a lot of...
it's an add on of some type, so very unlikely that it will affect anything if removed.
I've never seen that particular type of knob used in any HMMWV.
As you say your truck doesn't have anything electrical added to it, I wouldn't worry too much.
The kit I linked above is designed to go to where the fording selector switch is located, of if you have the switch then just below it next to the diagnostic port works also.
I think it was about 15 feet of cable total to install in that location. It's all negative cable (unless you installed...
not without some wheel spacers. Usually a 2" wheel spacer is used. Some people get away with no spacers, but when I tried it on mine it was rubbing hard against the parking brake cable.
battery cables should be 2/0 I believe.

it looks like the M416A1 had the surge brakes (I checked the TM for that), and if the internet is to believed then they started production in 1978.
The regular M416 (not the A1 version) just has the parking brake.
It should be pretty obvious looking at the trailer tongue whether it has surge...
That was the last item in my earlier post on the things to check first before starting to tear into it.
It happens to everyone. Just visit the HMMWV forum some time and search for all the people that can't start their truck that end up not having it in neutral and it will make you feel better...
That would be the Marine Armor Kit (MAK) if you are referring to the M1123
So the "supplemental armor" when it comes to doors is basically a layer of sheet metal that attaches over the outside of the normal X-door. It still uses the same hinges as the regular X-doors and the soft doors.
The...
might just be the camera angles, but to me it looks almost like they have lowered it a little bit.
or comparing the two pictures, I would guess that the suspension has quite a bit of adjustment to increase or decrease height and clearance.
First thing I would recommend you do is get the batteries tested to make sure they aren't failing. Always a good idea to check out the batteries any time you are troubleshooting electrical.
if it had the snorkel intake and exhaust, that piece is replaced with a solid cap to keep water from creeping in if submerged, so that is where the concern comes in. Without knowing if it had the snorkel or not, no way to know which rubber cap is installed (and even then it's probably screwed...
oddly enough, my M1123 from Yermo had the duckbill drain valve on the air filter housing rather than the solid one for fording. So it could go either way.
Still, it's probably a good idea to have the driver cover it before they drive up here. Tape should work as long as the surface is clean...
