Thanks Jeff, but I just got a complete gasket set on eBay... I already talked myself into it! I figure my pan gasket is leaking, and I'd like to pound out a dent while I have it off. Also my valve cover gaskets could stand to be replaced. That and the oil cooler gaskets and o-rings, the rest...
I got it at Worthington Ag Parts. I had to call a few different locations, they have yards in several states... Some White tractors were missing their engines, others were selling the engine complete as a running take-out and did not want to pull the filter housing off. I finally found one...
The sealing surface diameter is smaller, but you can see that the filter bodies are at least as wide as the cartridge filter housings... take a look at the pics on page one of this thread... there's a shot of the actual Napa 1458 filter.
I'd like to get this installed while I'm on vacation...
Thanks for the tip on the fuel filter, Marcus!
I removed my fuel tank today, I'm going to strip it down and clean it and all the pieces, do rust treatment if necessary, then reassemble. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do with all this old fuel... I have many buckets full! I tried burning...
Thanks for all the comments and support, guys! I've been so busy this week (working out of town, mostly) that I haven't had time to look over the new truck much, let alone take pics or post here. Hopefully I'll get some breathing room soon.
Definitely! I hope the engine is in good shape...
What a trip!
That was a ton of fun... and everything went perfectly, including the weather.
My friend Keith showed up at 0545, and we hit the road right at 0600. Keith was once a school bus driver, and has kept his commercial class A license with passenger and air brake endorsements up to...
It's home! 540 miles round trip in 19 hours including fuel and food breaks and three hours at the campus prepping the truck and hooking it up to the towbar.
Flawless trip. Pics and full write-up to follow, right now I'm going to sleep.

I've got a big piece of very thick cardboard tube that fits inside the rubber of the seal and over the spindle... I whack the end of the tube with a 2x4, and it drives the seal on perfectly. I think the tube was from a cable reel, but I can't remember.

Man, how did I screw that up? My memory must be going, I swear it was just under 200 miles each way! I want to avoid driving through Los Angeles, so my route will be to go up Hwy. 395 to the 58, and take that all the way to the 101. My map program also shows that as my shortest route at 260...
Well, I got my phone call today - I've been waiting very patiently, but finally the "title conflict" has been resolved, and that means an MV road trip is at hand. With cash in pocket and towbar and tools in the bed, a friend and I will head to San Luis Obispo in my deuce this coming monday...
I had to think about that for a while... I knew 2-stroke Detroits can run in reverse rotation, but a 4-stroke? I think it could work though (I studied one of my model airplane engines to confirm!)
It would compress air on the power stroke and fire on the compression stroke, blow exhaust out...
I believe that the tach drive unit, like the speedo drive unit, can be assembled to run in either direction required... Someone probably serviced the drive unit on your truck sometime in the past and reassembled it backwards. Should be an easy enough fix.
Devilman,
All the filters listed below are supposedly (according to Baldwin's site) equivalent to a Napa 1458. Are any of them better filters or are they all under rated for the deuce? I couldn't find ratings for any of them online. I wondered if there was a bigger or better filter that would...
COOL! 8) I like the look of the rear tire-to-bed clearance being the about same as the front tire-to-fender clearance. Gives you a little more clearance for driving over uneven "terrain", eh?
What is that thing on top of your exhaust in the third pic?
Regards,
Jon
