there is no spin on that I know of that is comparable to the stock unit. the stock filter is way bigger and changes can be made in the same time as a spin on. I would not change it.
I saw daves spin on setup and it is tiny compared to stock.
it tells you right on the data plate how to use it. but its as simple as moving the switch towards the pass side while cranking and then let up when running. use as needed till you have a smooth idle.
does you manifold heater work? I'd be willing to bet the batteries might not have the CCA umph that the 6tl's do. would you be able to swap them or carry extra's?
if it wont run you can use the starter to move it. have you tried opening the drain on each filer to see if your getting fuel to the ip? you can also listen with the fuel cap removed to see if the tank pump is actually moving fuel.
