Well today I found the source of the voltage control problems on my new to me MEP-003a, it seems someone wired T2 up backwards with the X1/X2 wires goes to H1/H2, and vice versa. This seems to be a simple enough step down transformer, but I can't find any specs online, so I am therefore asking...
Such stories on generator installations are all too common, it seems more Electricians get it wrong than get it right. The worse part is they get very offended if you tell them they have been doing things wrong
That is a hard call, I have both also (well one is a MEP-701a (016b in ASK), it really depends on how you plan to use it. The 16D is dead simple no frills, and has a pull starter which is nice if you are not wanting to maintain a dedicated battery, but the 16B is going to be a bit stronger and...
Sorry about being slow getting back to this thread, but my day started in Seattle today, and now I am back home in Louisiana, not really awake enough to type anything at the moment though, will try to post back after I have slept some.

n1oty, I agree that the test procedures in the TM should be followed, but it is my understanding that the voltage regulators boards on the MEP-002a and MEP-003a work by suppressing the full output voltage from the saturatable reactor, so therefore are unlikely to be the culprit in this case, it...
Dropping off upon release from the start switch does sound to me like a problem in the voltage regulation system. In my experience the most common cause of this is bad rotating rectifier diodes, on the one hand they are cheap, on the other they can be a bit of a pain to get to and replace...
Usually when the AVR board dies the voltage goes high on these units, no voltage is more likely associated with either a bad reactor or more likely a bad rotating diode. Just to clear things up here in your description, is the voltage dropping off as soon as you release the start switch, or...
I would tend to think that your air leak is on the suction side of the fuel pumps or in the removable base on them, if you have not cleaned the strainers on the bottom of the fuel pumps you may want to do so now, the gasket there can often be flipped to provide a good sealing surface.

I am not familiar with the voltage regulator on the MEP-005, but a common issue with these units is people frying the voltage regulator (often it is the output transistors) by running them for more than a few seconds at under their rated 60 hz speed. You should never idle one of these...
My guess is their logic is / was that many people buy generators either to prepare for or after natural disasters (say during a particularly bad hurricane season) and it would be bad PR to hold up a person from picking up their generator after their whole community has been wiped out. Therefore...
I have bought from flight systems before including one of their reverse engineered direct replacement control boards for an Onan commercial generator, but have never touched one of their universal controllers. They are a great company, and will go out of their way to help on tech support...
Ok, it does look commercial, but with lots of modifications over the years, it is not Onan and not Kohler, something about the control panel look makes me think Generac. If the Basler AVR is original (do the mounting holes look factory?) then probably not Stamford or Leroy Somer either since...
I am wondering if the dieing after 5 minutes may be unrelated, do you have the vent switch open on the bottom side of the fuel tank fill cap? (the little lever in the middle that turns for vent open/closed) Also are you getting return fuel flow when switch is in prime position?
Ease of starting depends on many factors, my MEP-002a will fire right up this time of year with no need to pre heat at all, but it did come from GL with a brand new starter installed which probably helps. By comparison my MEP-003a will start without preheating, but chugs and sputters a bit even...
Since it did seem to start to build voltage from the field flash I suspect you may have a problem in your voltage regulation system, It could be something very simple like a loose wire or a bad connection in the push to reset AC breaker down by the front outlet (if it happens again try tripping...
They also make this one http://www.flightsystems.com/genstart/index.html which has some nice features like auto exercise, and accepts voltage and current inputs, etc. It is a bit more pricey though.
I had a lot of powdery scale build up and some rust on the screen on my MEP-003a filler, a short (15-20 minute) bath in a phosphoric acid / CLR solution removed most of the scale and left the brass screen downright shiny.

p.s. I would suggest checking frequently and not over doing it.
