While this is an interesting project, if I were to look at retrofitting auto start to a MEP generator I would strongly consider a product like this one from flight systems http://www.flightsystems.com/standby-generator-ats-controls/model-540-genset-control-panel-engine-control.html

It sounds to me like since this was a good running unit that did not show slow signs of loss of compression that a better suspect might be a broken cam shaft, what does everyone think? I know they do break as I have a DJE with one that I acquired for free a while back.

The correct batteries for the MEP-003a are 6TL's these are very large, somewhat hard to find and expensive, a good alternative is a pair of group 24 batteries turned sideways in the tray plus a spacer on each side. (actually one 24 and one 24R so the positive and negative posts are near each...
I am pretty sure both those plates are identical on the MEP-002a and MEP-003a, the top one is the terminal connection diagram, I am not sure about the bottom one though as I think they are missing off both of mine, I know my MEP-003a does not have a data plate there, not sure about the MEP-002a...
Those are of course conservative military numbers the 3.25 inch bore civilian DJB which does not have an oil cooler is rated at 11.6 BHP (I don't have the number on the closest civilian cousin to the MEP 002a, the DJE with 3.5 inch bore), and the civilian DJC (close cousin to the MEP-003a, again...
GL's web site has a problem with the invoice tab not updating right (caching problem), your new stuff will sometimes show if you do a forced full reload on the page (shift reload in most browsers). As to EUC's that requirement was dropped a couple of years ago for generators and generators...
I can't help think if this is in part caused by our current media culture, with tv shows like Storage Wars popularizing the concept of bidding insane amounts of money gambling on the value of an item / items based on minimal information as well as all the marketing puff pieces GL manages to get...
Like doghead said, it is usually the next day, typically by noon, but sometimes it is up to 24 hours from end of auction, if longer than that call GL and see if there is an issue. My MEP-003a that I just bought was the slowest of all the non EUC things I have bought from GL with the invoice...
Good luck on it, if the canisters are missing it is just a good excuse to go ahead and upgrade to spin on filters. I am just a couple of weeks ahead of you in the MEP-003a process, I have been bidding on them for a couple of years until I finally won an auction for one at what I consider an...
Probably for much the same reason that someone paid $2,500 (close to $3,000 with tax and fees) for a nice looking MEP-002a today http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/view?auctionId=6543517&convertTo=USD Oh boy are they going to be unhappy when they realize what they bought.

(note I...
Well I am hopeful that my problem is not the CVT now, testing showed most measurements within the +/- 10% of spec, all except the X windings which showed 1.93 - 1.96 Ohms, spec is 1.68 +/- .168, measurements were taken with a Fluke 87V in high res mode.

p.s. the H windings all measured a...
I am trouble shooting a voltage regulation problem (voltage going high, regulator good, no output showing on panel meters) on my MEP-003a and have now reached the point of testing CVT1 per the TM. The instructions in the TM say to measure resistance between H1-H2, H3-H4, H5-H6, and between...
These generators often sell as is on GL for $350-$500 (of course there are also rare occasions that they go higher), and I would would say most that are sold on the open market by individuals on craigslist, ebay, etc. end up selling for under about $1,000, those with asking prices higher than...
The generators you have are not MEP-016C's they are now MEP-016D's which are A or C series that have been retrofitted with Yanmar L70 diesel engines, I agree $1,200 is high on the used market unless they are in mint shape. You might get it there are a lot on ebay in that range, but they don't...
I am getting closer on mine too, I had to adjust the throttle cable some, it is not the correct cable, but will work. I also found part of the lack of AC voltage problem, the push to reset AC breaker was not resetting, it looks like someone else had been searching for the problem before sending...
