Congrats on your purchase! Secure the lug wrench and make sure the cargo canvas is secured well. You wouldn't want them to fly off while motoring and cause an accident.
You should do a baseline sample. Sample the new clean oil because some of the elements in the clean oil are also in dirty oil and you'll need to know how many more PPM are in your used oil for the analysis to make any sense. Sitting with old used oil is just as bad as extended change intervals...
Do the M1009 and the M1008 share some of the same drivetrain components? That might help to know as it seems there are more 1009s around than the 1008s.
WOW  Try filling the cavity with WD40, diesel or some other oil based liquid to try to soften the rust up and maybe a little heat, like a propane torch, not oxy/acet. heat, on the outside of the bearing housing. Be patient, don't get in a hurry when you start taking it apart.

Where's the GL lady? Wonder if she can do anything about him. His answers are very short, like NO! and seems snotty, like he is doing you a favor by talking to you.
Mark, welcome! It's nice to see another So Cal member. There are a few people up by Barstow, maybe they'll chime in and offer a hand. There is a sticky at the top of the deuce forum, check it out. It gives a rundown of what to bring when recovering one of these beasts. Read the 10 manual, it helps.
Floridianson is correct. Leave the #2 port open to atmosphere, or put a vent cap in it...like the one on the differential. The #1 port is a direct line to the tank. It allows the air pressure in the tank to tell the governer to stop the compressor from building more air, it is a sensing line...
