The Varistor is not part of the official "Fuse Mod". The addition of the Varistor is done to protect the A1 Voltage Regulator from damage. The Fuse Mod only protects the Quad Winding in the gen head should the A1 VR fail and short out.

Those are insulated posts that the battery cables can be clamped to should you disconnect or remove the battery. Insulated so you can still pull start and run the generator with no battery in it (so they don't short to each other or ground)

To my knowledge the leads would be irrelevant. Shouldn't matter which lead is which. Just generates pulses to S14 to determine if the set is mostly up to speed.
